I am Jim Hurley, trainer at CrossFit St Charles. I began coaching because CrossFit changed my life and I'd like to share my passion.
As a lifelong fitness enthusiast, I never realized how little I knew about REAL fitness until I became a student of CrossFit.
All those years of globo-gym weight lifting and muscle/ego building did little to prepare me for the functional fitness I now enjoy as a result of my CrossFit endeavors. For me, square one was January 2009 when Ingrid dragged me kicking and screaming to watch her and my 3 boys workout at CrossFit St Charles. I really got excited watching the workout in spite of my "I don't need this" attitude and decided to participate the following week. Firmly convinced of my fitness superiority, I attacked the baseline WOD and was humbled, sore and left licking the wounds on my ego. WOW! I never expected air squats, sit ups, push ups and pull ups to kick me in the sack like that. What else could this method entail? Perhaps there is something to it... I had to find out. Boy, did I find out. Over 3 years later, I am 100% addicted to CrossFit, the CrossFit lifestyle and the CrossFit community. At 45, this isn't my first rodeo, but nothing has challenged me so and made me feel so happy.
I graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1988 with a B.S. in General Engineering and a belief that fitness and usefulness are inextricably intertwined. I flew the A-10 for 2 years and the F-15 for 16 years. I began flying for United Airlines in 1997 and currently fly the 767...but my real passion is CrossFit. In fact, the best thing about my flying job (other than the paychecks) is that it facilitates my mission to visit as many CrossFit boxes in the world as I can. Layovers rock for this purpose. I'm at 27 and counting!
So here I am today, still learning and striving to be the best CrossFitter I can. I am Level 1 certified from CrossFit HQ and hold the Olympic Lifting and Gymnastics specialty certifications and HKC Kettlebell certification with Dan John. I have also attended the Whole9 Nutrition Workshop and am a USAW Level 1 Sport Performance Coach
